2006 Buick Rendezvous Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2006 Buick Rendezvous Review
A more powerful base engine and added standard equipment mark 2006 for Buick's crossover SUV. Rendezvous seats up to seven and shares a basic platform with Buick's Terraza minivan. Rendezvous seats five with a standard three-place 2nd-row split bench seat that slides fore and aft. A two-passenger 3rd-row seat is optional, as are twin bucket seats to replace the 2nd-row bench. Rendezvous offers front-wheel drive with optional traction control or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Newly standard is a 195-hp 3.5-liter V6, replacing a 185-hp 3.4. Optional is a 242-hp 3.6 V6. Both use a 4-speed automatic transmission. OnStar assistance is newly standard. ABS and front side airbags are optional; no curtain side airbags are offered.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to 8-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buys include Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Our Recommended picks are Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Ford Freestyle, Nissan Murano, Nissan Xterra, and Toyota 4Runner.

New or significantly redesigned models include Hummer H3, Jeep Commander, Pontiac Torrent, and Subaru B9 Tribeca.

News
Buick's version of the late Pontiac Aztec will be stepping aside for the 2008 Enclave, a new and larger car-type crossover wagon due in the first half of 2007. A recent concept preview is said to be very close to the final product except for some interior features. Buick confirms V6 and possibly V8 power, a choice front-wheel and all-wheel drive, and three-row seating. We should be getting more on Enclave soon, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
4 4 5 5

No opportunity yet to test with 195-hp V6. Stronger 242-hp V6 responsive enough for most situations. Transmission delivers adequate downshifts.
Fuel Economy

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
5 5 4 3.8

Test AWD with 3.4 V6 averaged 19.7 mpg in mostly highway driving. Test AWD 3.6 averaged 13.6 mpg in mostly city use. Buick recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines.
Ride Quality

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
4 4 4 5.4

Fair bump absorption, but body rocks, sways on uneven surfaces, inducing undue floating and residual motions. Stable on smooth highways, but washboard surfaces trigger jiggly wheel patter.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
3 4 4 4.1

Early onset of body lean, modest tire grip, and mediocre steering feel. With ABS, stopping power adequate but pedal feel is spongy; no opportunity to test without ABS. Even with AWD, fast takeoffs caused torque steer--unwanted pulling to the side.
Quietness

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
5 5 6 5.2

Prominent coarse-surface tire roar, average wind-noise suppression. Refined 242-hp V6 emits a nice growl at full throttle, is subdued at highway speed. Some testers complained of a subtle, high-pitched whistle from dashboard area in one model tested.
Controls

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
6 6 6 6.3

Mostly well laid out, but some dashboard markings hard to read. Interior decor attractive and balances some hard plastic sections with soft-touch surfaces. GM's navigation/audio system a relatively easy-to-use mating of map screen, navigation functions, and stereo controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
5 5 5 6.7

Good space and easy entry/exit for adults, though head room isn't generous for those over 6 ft tall. Some testers complain of too-soft padding, lumpy contours. Visibility impeded by thick middle and rear roof pillars, is offset by large door mirrors.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
6 6 6 6.2

Toe, leg space tight for adults. Moving 2nd-row back leaves little knee space in 3rd row. Rear benches have little leg support. Available 2nd-row buckets don't tip/fold to help 3rd-row access. Doors open wide to ease entry/exit, but are long enough to crowd things in tight parking spaces.
Cargo Room

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
9 9 9 8.3

Many load-carrying options, but barely enough room for grocery bags behind 3rd-row seat. Lowering liftgate takes muscle. Ample small-item storage.
Value within Class

2WD AWD AWD, 3.6 V6 Class Average
3 3 4 5.7

Buick pitches Rendezvous as a lower-priced alternative to premium SUVs such as the Acura MDX and Lexus RX. GM's 3.6-liter engine is as refined as any competitor's V6, but Rendezvous falls well short of the polished moves and high-end ambience of premium SUVs, while generally costing more than stellar midsize competitors such as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
