Fast, fun, and well-built, the A3 is an excellent entry-level luxury choice. I'd like to see entry-level luxury top out at about $27,000, though, not the $32K-plus that you can spend on an A3.

Audi does it again, another fantastic vehicle that no one was asking for. One wonders why Audi can't become a mainstream luxury brand in the U.S.? Simply it is because of quirky cars like the A3. Too small to be a family vehicle, yet what single adult wants a wagon? I also have to ask, why the rear sun shades? They seem silly on such a small car. I loved driving the A3 and thing it is a perfectly sorted car for European tastes, but for the U.S., it is an instant afterthought.

As premium compacts go, the A3 seems a sporty entry at a reasonable price. And though some "regular" compacts approach it for performance and others for accommodations, matching the A3 for both--at lower cost--would be tough.
