ACCELERATION

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
6 5 6 6.4

Fine in gentle driving, but in enthusiastic work, both models can feel sluggish until engine speed climbs past 3000 rpm or so. Then, Type-S in particular feels spirited. Test Type-S did 7.2 sec 0-60 mph. Base model less lively, especially with automatic transmission.

FUEL ECONOMY

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
7 6 6 5.5

Test Type-S averaged 21.3 mpg in mostly city driving, 24.3 with more highway use. No opportunity to measure base model. Acura recommends premium-grade fuel for Type-S, regular for base RSX.

RIDE QUALITY

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
5 5 4 3.9

Firm, but not harsh or punishing. Type-S slightly thumpier than base RSX but stiff, rattle-free structure partly compensates.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
8 8 9 8

Among the very best-handling front-drive cars, and Type-S is impressive by any measure. Both models show minimal cornering lean, great grip. Steering quick, precise, nicely weighted, and has good road feel. Brakes powerful, especially on Type-S with its larger front discs.

QUIETNESS

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
4 4 3 3.2

Marked tire roar, especially in Type-S, plus slight wind noise at highway speeds. Engine and exhaust get loud above 4000 rpm, where performance is best, but engines quite refined otherwise.

CONTROLS

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
8 8 8 5.5

Legible gauges, though enthusiasts might like more-prominent tachometer markings. Climate, audio controls simple, thoughtfully angled toward driver near eye level. Materials are of good quality with sporty, reasonably upscale feel, especially the available perforated-leather seats. Terrific workmanship on test Type-S.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
5 5 5 5.2

Small-car snug, but comfortable. Good leg room, though limited head room for tall adults. Seats are comfortable, with large bolsters for terrific support in turns. Small rear side windows, thick roof pillars, fastback profile hamper aft visibility.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
2 2 2 1.4

Cramped for adults, OK for kids on short trips, though very limited head room. Entry/exit an awkward squeeze between front seat and doorjamb, though tip-slide front-passenger seat helps.

CARGO ROOM

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
5 5 5 3.2

Useful hatchback design and easy-fold split rear seatbacks, but heavy hatch lid, high liftover are minuses. Cabin storage includes multiple bins, pockets, though none are generously sized.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Base, man. Base, auto. Type-S Class Average
8 7 8 6.6

RSX is a fun-to-drive, stoutly built, and competitively priced Recommended pick. Driving enthusiasts will want a Type-S, but the lower-cost base model appeals, too. Maximum driving satisfaction requires working any RSX fairly hard, so consider the Scion tC for performance that's easier to access in another high-value sporty coupe.
