Vehicle Highlights
Volkswagen's SUV gets more V6 power and new options for 2005. Touareg (TOUR-regg) is a 4-dr wagon with rear liftgate and no 3rd-row seating available. It offers three engines: a V6 with 240 hp, an increase of 20 hp from 2004; a 310-hp V8; and 310-hp turbodiesel V10. The sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate. All Touaregs have an all-wheel-drive system designed for severe off-road conditions. It includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential; a locking rear differential is optional. ABS and an antiskid system are standard. A height-adjustable air suspension and xenon headlamps are standard on the V10, available for other models. The V6 comes with 17-inch wheels; others use 18s or optional 19s. All Touaregs include front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags for both seating rows. New for 2005 are available self-dimming exterior mirrors. All models have wood and aluminum interior trim and a sunroof. Leather upholstery is optional for the V6, standard otherwise. Other options include navigation system, obstacle detection, and heated steering wheel and rear seats. Touareg was developed with Porsche, which offers its own version as the Cayenne.
COMPETITION
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.
Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Volvo XC90.
