Vehicle Highlights
Passat sheds its unpopular W8 models, but makes few other changes for this final year of its current design. Volkswagen's midsize car line comprises sedans and wagons in GL, GLS, and GLX trim. All include front side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. GLS models use a 170-hp 1.8-liter turbo 4-cyl engine; TDI versions substitute a 134-hp 2.0-liter 4-cyl turbodiesel. For '05, GL models are available only with the turbodiesel engine. Top-line GLX models have a 190-hp V6. A 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate is standard on all models except the GLS 1.8T, where it is optional. The GLS 1.8T comes with a 5-speed manual. Most Passats have front-wheel drive with traction control. GLX and non-TDI GLS models also offer VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive. An antiskid system is standard for GLX and GLS models, optional for GLs. OnStar assistance is available for all but the GL. Also for 2005, GLS models exchange 15-inch alloy wheels for standard 16s, while GLX models swap 16s for standard 17-inch alloy wheels. The discontinued W8 had a 270-hp 8-cyl engine. VW says redesigned 2006 Passats begin sale in late 2005.
