ACCELERATION
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.3 |
Adequate, but not exciting, though some testers admire prompt throttle response of V6/automatic-transmission combination. Test drives support Saturn's claim of 8.2 sec 0-60 mph.
FUEL ECONOMY
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.2 |
Averaged 18.5 mpg in our test. Saturn recommends regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.1 |
Well-controlled over wavy surfaces and never harsh, but does not absorb bumps as well as Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.1 |
Cornering confident enough, but control of body lean nothing special. Steering linear, if slightly overassisted. Good braking power and pedal feel. Standard ABS and traction control are welcome safety pluses.
QUIETNESS
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 6 |
Suspension groans, body creaks over bumps. Engine sounds coarse and intrusive at higher rpm. Wind noise unobjectionable.
CONTROLS
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 6.6 |
Large, clear gauges. Climate system allows use of air conditioning in any vent mode, a nice touch. Power-window switches in center console rather than on door panel, which not all drivers like. Gear-position readout for automatic transmission washes out in bright sunlight. Most controls made of budget-grade plastic, have crude action. Dashtop cover feels thick and rich, but other cabin materials seem lightweight and cheap vs. furnishings in most import rivals.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 6.3 |
Adequate head and leg room, though some testers find seats lack contour and support. Vision directly aft pinched by high deck, and shorter drivers may find cowl too high for best forward visibility.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.7 |
Room competitive with most rivals, but seat cushion too soft and low to floor for much comfort.
CARGO ROOM
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 4.5 |
Large, accessible trunk a competitive advantage. Split rear seat folds nearly flat in easy motion.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| L300 | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 5.7 |
While Saturn's one-price strategy and plastic body panels are assets to some buyers, the L300 trails most competitors for quality and refinement. But Saturn has strayed from its long-standing no-rebates policy, so look for deep discounts on this little-loved lame duck.
