At $19,200 for the test model, I can think of a lot of better deals (Mazda3 comes to mind). It's unfortunate that Ion's improvements have come on the 2 and 3 models. The 1s would probably be the best deal, when you consider that the capable engine performance and roominess are not compromised.

At first, the $19,000 sticker set me aback. But that includes items not even offered on some rivals: curtain airbags, compass/temp, and OnStar. Also leather, at a reasonable $700. But the Ion just doesn't look or act like a $19,000 car, unlike a Jetta or Mazda 3.
