Vehicle Highlights
The 911 lineup for 2005 blends redesigned rear-wheel-drive models with carryover all-wheel-drive models. All have a rear-mounted, horizontally opposed 6-cyl engine. The redesigned 2005 models are available as coupes and convertible Cabriolets. Compared to the carryover models, the redesigned coupe and convertible have subtly altered styling and dimensions and a revamped interior. They come as the Carerra, with a 325-hp 3.6-liter engine, and as the Carerra S, with a 355-hp 3.8. Retaining a vintage-1999 coupe and convertible design are the 320-hp Carerra 4S and 444-hp Turbo S. Both have AWD and a 3.6-liter engine.
A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on all 911s. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate and steering-wheel controls is optional. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, antiskid/traction control, and front side airbags are standard. The redesigned Carreras introduce additional side airbags that deploy from the windowsills for head protection. Convertibles include a power top and heated glass rear window. Standard on Carrera S and optional on Carrera is a suspension with lowered ride height and shock absorbers that adjust firmness within driver-selectable Normal and Sport modes. Carrera S has 19-inch wheels vs. 18s for other models. Optional for both rear-drive Carreras is a Sport Chrono Package Plus that allows altering various engine and chassis controls for higher-performance driving. It includes a dashboard-mounted stopwatch. All 911s offer a navigation system.
COMPETITION
Consumer GuideĀ® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Offering more power and style than typical Sporty/Performance vehicles, Premium Sporty/Performance Cars usually cost much more and have more comfort and convenience equipment. Two-passenger convertibles and 4-seat coupes rule the roost in this class.
Our Best Buy is the Chevrolet Corvette. Our Recommended picks include the BMW Z4, Chrysler Crossfire, and Mercedes-Benz CLK.
