2005 Pontiac Grand Am Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2005 Pontiac Grand Am Review
Retail sales of the sedan body style cease during 2005 as Pontiac begins to phase-in Grand Am's replacement, a new car called the G6. Grand Am now offers only coupes in GT and GT1 trim. They come with a 175-hp V6, automatic transmission, traction control, and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. SC/T option packages include such features as a hood made of a plasticlike composite material, plus rear spoiler, chrome wheels and exhaust tips, SC/T logos, and satellite radio. The last is also a separate option, as is a CD/MP3 player. Side airbags are not offered.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.

Our Best Buys include the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks include the Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Outback and Legacy.
News
Detroit dirt-diggers say Pontiac will keep building Grand Am sedans for rental fleets and such as long as demand holds up. Grand Am coupes reportedly hang on until early in 2005, when they're set to be replaced by sporty 2-dr versions of the just-introduced G6 sedan.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GT Class Average
6 5.3

V6 gutsy for the class; test car did about 8 sec 0-60 mph. But quick takeoffs can induce bothersome torque steer--pulling to one side. Transmission acceptably smooth, responsive.
Fuel Economy

GT Class Average
5 5.2

Test V6 versions averaged 19.4-23.7 mpg depending on driving conditions. Pontiac recommends regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

GT Class Average
5 6.1

Not harsh over most bumps, but not that compliant, either. Chassis loses its cool on rough pavement at highway speeds, compromising stability.
Steering/Handling/Braking

GT Class Average
6 6.1

Far from Euro-sedan precise, but Grand Am has pleasantly weighted steering, reasonably quick turn-in, and good cornering grip. Brake-pedal feel is firm, stopping performance adequate with standard ABS.
Quietness

GT Class Average
4 6

Loud engine moan at high rpm, and sporty exhaust note quickly grows tiresome. Tires thrum intrusively on rough surfaces, thump loudly over tar strips. Wind noise a constant.
Controls

GT Class Average
3 6.6

Overstyled dash annoys with deeply recessed gauges. Major controls group conveniently around the driver, though switch action feels cheap. Interior materials subpar for the class.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GT Class Average
5 6.3

Sufficient room, but spongy seats don't support well in spirited cornering, and some drivers find manual-tilt steering wheel is too close.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GT Class Average
3 4.7

A little cramped for adults, as is entry/exit. Seat too soft, cushion too small, for long-haul comfort.
Cargo Room

GT Class Average
4 4.5

Spacious trunk, but opening is small, liftover high. Standard split folding rear seatbacks compensate some.
Value within Class

GT Class Average
4 5.7

Grand Am is overdue for replacement, lacking the refinement, build quality, and interior space of most import rivals. Main attractions are strong V6 power, competent road manners, and lots of equipment at attractive prices.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
