2005 Pontiac G6 Review
Pontiac replaced its best-selling car during the 2005 model year with the G6. This new midsize sedan takes over from the compact Grand Am, which came only as a coupe for an abbreviated '05 model year. G6 shares a basic front-wheel-drive design with the Chevrolet Malibu and the 9-3 from GM-owned Saab. G6 has a slightly longer wheelbase than Pontiac's other midsize car, the Grand Prix, but is 9.3 inches shorter in overall length. G6 offers base and sportier GT models. Both use the 200-hp 3.5-liter V6 and 4-speed automatic transmission offered in Malibu. The GT adds a manual shift gate and a firmer suspension with 17-inch wheels vs. the base's 16s. Both versions have 4-wheel disc brakes. The GT comes with antilock brakes, traction control, and power-adjustable pedals, all of which are available for the base G6. Front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are available as a single option. Leather upholstery and OnStar assistance are exclusive GT options. Satellite radio and remote starting are available on both models. So are a conventional sunroof or a "panoramic" power sunroof with a tilt-up front section and three rear-sliding panels that open to near the full length of the passenger compartment. Due for 2006 are coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible body styles, along with a 4-cyl base model and a high-performance GTP with a 3.9-liter V6 and available 6-speed manual transmission.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.

Our Best Buys include the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks include the Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Outback and Legacy.
News
The coming 4-cyl G6 SE sedan will use GM's corporate 2.4-liter "Ecotec" engine with 170 hp. It's expected to start sale in the second quarter of 2005 as an early '06 entry. The same goes for the sporty GTP sedan also mentioned above. G6 coupes should arrive by fall of '05 with several engine and trim choices, followed by hideaway-hardtop convertible models a few months later. For 2007, sources forecast the addition of a higher-performance GXP sedan and/or coupe, perhaps with a supercharged 3.9 V6.
