2005 Nissan Frontier Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2005 Nissan Frontier Review
Nissan's compact pickup trucks are redesigned for 2005. They're larger, more powerful, and have new features, including available curtain side airbags. Frontier comes in extended King Cab and Crew Cab body styles. King Cabs have flip-up rear seats and rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts. Crews have a fold-down rear bench and four conventional doors. King Cabs have a 6.1-ft bed, Crew Cabs a 5.0-ft bed. Based on a shortened version of Nissan's full-size Titan pickup platform, the '05 Frontier is 9.8 inches longer in wheelbase than the 1998-2004 Frontier and as much as 12.4 inches longer overall.

XE, SE, LE, and NISMO models are offered; XE is exclusive to King Cabs. The NISMO Off-Road is named for Nissan's motorsports arm. Both cab styles are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that should not be left engaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. Standard on XE is a 154-hp 4-cyl engine, replacing the previous Frontier's 143-hp 4-cyl. Standard on all other models is a 265-hp V6, replacing 180-hp and 210-hp V6s. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard with the 4-cyl, a 6-speed manual is standard with the V6; the available automatic is now a 5-speed instead of a 4-speed.

Frontiers come with antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. Front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover both seating rows are available. Traction control and an antiskid system are optional. NISMO models have Bilstein-brand shock absorbers, skid plates, locking rear differential, and all-terrain tires. They also offer Hill Start Assist, which prevents sliding backward, and Hill Descent Control designed to limit speed down steep slopes. The '05 Frontiers are available with a factory spray-in bedliner and Nissan's Utili-Track cargo-bed system with adjustable tie-downs and storage accessories. Other options include heated front seats and a tubular roof rack.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Pickups offer a true-truck design in a relatively modest package. They are best suited for personal or light-duty use rather than commercial use, heavy hauling, or towing.

Our Best Buy is the Toyota Tacoma. Our Recommended picks include the Dodge Dakota and Ford Ranger.
News
The newest Frontiers are just off the starting line, so no major changes are expected right away.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
6 6 6 4.9

Only V6 models made available for test so far. Frontier's V6 has class-leading horsepower. It's strong from a stop and around town, especially in lighter King Cabs. Automatic transmission kicks down quickly for good midrange passing punch. Maximum towing capacity is 5000 lb.
Fuel Economy

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4

Test 4WD Crew Cab with automatic transmission averaged 14.5 mpg in mixed driving.
Ride Quality

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 4

Firm but absorbent. Sharp ridges register noticeably, but are never jarring. Typical trucklike bounding and jiggle over bumps is quickly quelled. Little difference between models equipped with 16-inch tires and those with 17s.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 3.8

Firm and controlled for a pickup truck. Steering is weighty and direct, though slow enough to frustrate close-quarters maneuvering. Body lean evident in corners but well-controlled, and Frontier never feels tippy.
Quietness

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4

V6 sounds coarse, but growls nicely under acceleration. Wind rush evident over 60 mph and becomes more noticeable as speed increases. Tires drone on rough pavement, and NISMO model's tires whine at highway speeds.
Controls

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5.8

Simple, handy layout. All controls within arm's reach, though they feel light and plasticky. Hard plastic used for dashboard, console, and door panels is merely serviceable.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
6 6 6 4.9

Good head and leg room for all but very tall. Seats comfortable, but could use more side bolstering to hold front passengers in place through turns. Visibility to front sides can be blocked by wide front pillars that get wider at the bottom. Unobstructed rear visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
2 3 3 2

King Cab's rear seats more suited for packages than people. Only small children will fit. Children are also best suited for the larger Crew Cab; room is tight with seats even halfway back, and head room is lacking for anyone over 6 ft--especially with available sunroof.
Cargo Room

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
3 3 3 3.1

Useful space behind front seats in both cab styles. Some thoughtful small-item storage up front, though console's shallow tray would benefit from rubber mat to keep objects from sliding around.
Value within Class

2WD SE King Cab, V6 auto. 4WD LE Crew Cab, auto. 4WD NISMO Crew Cab, auto. Class Average
6 6 6 6.3

Frontier carves out a nice niche for itself in the compact-pickup market with a powerful V6, useful size that isn't too big, and options that appeal to off-road enthusiasts. Ride and handling are also good for the class, though the interior disappoints with too many hard plastic surfaces and little back-seat room.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
