Vehicle Highlights

Nissan's large SUV adds an available rearview camera for its second year. Armada is based on the Titan pickup, sharing its 305-hp V8 and 5-speed automatic transmission with tow-haul mode. It offers SE and LE wagons with either rear-wheel drive or 4WD that can be used on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing. The SE Off-Road model is available only with 4WD. All models come with 3-row seating, ABS, antiskid system, and tire-pressure monitor. Also standard are head-protecting curtain side airbags covering all rows. Front side airbags and leather upholstery are available for SE, standard otherwise. Armadas have a rear liftgate with separate opening glass. A power liftgate is now included on LEs and newly available for SEs. LEs also come with a load-leveling rear suspension that's optional for other models. The SE Off-Road includes skid plates, special suspension, and 17-inch wheels vs. other models' 18s. SE and SE Off-Road have 2nd- and 3rd-row bench seats for 8-passenger capacity. LEs offer 2nd-row buckets with a removable center console or an optional bench. All 2nd- and 3rd-row seats fold to form a level load deck. Other linewide standards include power-adjustable pedals, heated mirrors, running boards, and rear obstacle detection. A navigation system is optional for LEs and now includes a TV camera that displays a rear view on the navigation screen when backing up. Satellite radio and rear DVD entertainment are available across the board. Nissan's upscale Infiniti brand sells a luxury-oriented Armada called QX56.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse 7-plus passenger wagons with brawny chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally abysmal fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and Ford Expedition. Our Recommended picks are the GMC Yukon/Denali, and the Toyota Sequoia.
