2005 Mitsubishi Outlander Review
Mitsubishi's least-expensive SUV adds new top-shelf models, standard 4-wheel disc brakes, and available manual transmission for 2005. This compact wagon is based on Mitsubishi's Lancer car platform and offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Joining LS and uplevel XLS models for '05 is the Limited version with unique trim touches inside and out. All Outlanders seat five and share a 160-hp 4-cyl engine. Their AWD lacks low-range gearing and is not designed for severe off-roading. A 5-speed manual transmission is now standard for the LS model. Optional for LS and standard on the others is a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate. The 4-wheel disc brakes replace rear drums for '05 and include larger front discs. Antilock brakes are optional on AWD XLS, standard on AWD Limited. Front side airbags are standard for Limited. Also for '05, rear-end styling is slightly revised and XLS joins the new Limited with standard 17-inch alloy wheels vs. steel 16s on LS. XLS also gets black fender flares. Limited adds body-color fender flares, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a premium audio system with in-dash CD/MP3 changer; the last is available for XLS. All models come with air conditioning, CD audio, power windows/locks/mirrors, and 60/40 split folding rear seat.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Among utility vehicles, Compact SUVs are the least costly and offer the best fuel economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty, off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles.

Our Best Buys include the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Mazda Tribute, and the Mercury Mariner. Our Recommended picks are the Honda Element, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Liberty, and Subaru Forester.
News
Mitsubishi's top U.S. exec recently confirmed a clean-sheet Outlander for 2007, but said no more. Tipsters, however, say the replacement shares a basic platform with Mitsubishi's redesigned 2008 Lancer subcompact cars, and will have a 3.0-liter V6 instead of a 2.4-liter 4-cyl.
