2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Full Review
Date Published: 5/21/08
2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Review
A smaller lineup and an additional high-performance model top the 2005 updates to Mitsubishi's smallest cars. All Lancers are sedans and use 4-cyl engines. Wagon versions have been dropped for '05. A 120-hp 2.0-liter powers the two least-expensive models: the ES and O-Z Rally. Last year's LS versions have been dropped. A 162-hp 2.4 powers the Ralliart models, and all these Lancers have front-wheel drive. The high-performance Evolution models--RS, VIII, and new-for-'05 MR--have all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter. For '05, all Evos have 276 hp, up 5. Automatic transmission is available for the ES, O-Z, and Ralliart models. All others have a 5-speed manual transmission, except the Evolution MR, which has a 6-speed.

Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are included on Ralliarts and Evos, not available on other Lancers. Front side airbags are available for O-Z and Ralliart models. The O-Z includes 15-inch O-Z racing-brand alloy wheels, aero body add-ons, and metal-look interior accents. Ralliarts feature 16-inch alloys, sport-tuned suspension, Evo-style front seats, and unique trim. Evolutions have 17-inch alloys, plus cosmetics and suspension tuning inspired by rallye-racing Evos. For 2005, the original Evo is redubbed Evolution VIII. The MR adds xenon headlights and pares pounds with an aluminum roof panel and lightweight BBS-brand forged-alloy wheels. The RS has less equipment and a lower price vs. the Evo VIII, and saves weight with thinner body sheetmetal and rear glass. All Evos have a limited-slip front differential and a new center differential with electronic instead of mechanical control, changes Mitsubishi says improve AWD responsiveness.

News
Mitsubishi is struggling to recover from several severe, long-standing problems. That's likely why Lancer's expected redesign has been delayed to model-year 2008. The makeover, said to trim weight vs. the current model, involves a new Mitsubishi-engineered front-drive platform called GS. This premiers at corporate stablemate Chrysler with the 2006 sportwagon replacement for the Dodge Neon. Lancer's redo also includes a new American-made 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine, a joint venture of Mitsubishi, Chrysler, and South Korea's Hyundai. This, too, will show up in various upcoming Chrysler-built small cars.

There had been talk of a small Lancer-based sportwagon at Mitsubishi itself, but we've heard nothing lately. Assuming it's still on the agenda, we'd look for it in 2007-08 as a belated answer to youth-targeted hatchbacks like Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Kia Spectra5, and Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix.

For 2006, Lancer's hot turbocharged all-wheel-drive Evolution VIII evolves into the Evo IX. Three versions return with a 10-hp bump, to 286, thanks to a new variable-valve-timing system. Subtle styling revisions are claimed to improve high-speed stability, and new wheels save 3.3 pounds apiece. Interiors are spruced up with faux carbon-fiber accents and new seats with pseudo-suede centers and leather bolsters. All-leather upholstery is a new option. Full details, including prices, should be released soon, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
4 3 6 8 4.1

The ES and O-Z models' 2.0-liter engine is adequate with manual transmission, feels sluggish with automatic. The Ralliart 2.4 is noticeably stronger and more relaxed with either transmission. Evolutions are real hot rods: a test '04 did 5.5 sec 0-60 mph.
Fuel Economy

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
7 7 6 5 6.7

Our test averages include 26.4 mpg for a manual-transmission O-Z; 23.1 for an automatic Ralliart, and 23.9 for a manual. Test Evolutions averaged 18.0 mpg in mostly city driving, 22.8 in mostly highway work. Mitsubishi requires premium-grade fuel for Evolutions.
Ride Quality

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
5 5 4 2 4.6

Evolutions are quite firm but not unbearably harsh, though new MR may be an exception. Ralliarts can jolt over sharp bumps, but ride is otherwise acceptable for sporty compacts. Other Lancers are stable and composed, though big bumps and dips can induce minor bounce.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
5 6 7 9 5.4

Mainstream models are economy-car competent, with moderate cornering lean and fail-safe front-drive moves. Ralliarts are more agile and fun. Evolutions have sports-car agility, tenacious AWD grip, but suffer a large turning circle. Stopping power adequate on ES and O-Z, but ABS should be offered on all Lancers, not just sporty models.
Quietness

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
5 5 5 2 4

Racy Evolutions are quite noisy, even in low-effort driving. Other models have acceptable wind and road noise, but suffer mild high-rpm engine boom.
Controls

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.5

Gauges and controls are nothing special, but cause no problems. Cabin materials are inoffensive, look durable. But plastics not that classy in any model. Doors, trunklid close with cheap-sounding clang.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
5 5 6 6 5

Cozy feel, but adult-size room. Comfortable, supportive seats, especially bolstered sport seats in Evolutions and Ralliarts. Tilt steering wheel standard. Visibility good, but Evolution VIII and MR rear spoiler obscures vehicles behind.
Room/Comfort (rear)

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
4 4 4 4 3.6

Average for class. Two medium adults, not cramped. Bench seat too firm and flat for best support, but livable.
Cargo Room

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
2 2 2 2 3.9

Fairly large trunk, but opening narrows at bottom and hinges intrude into space. Models, except ES and Evo, include handy 60/40 split folding seatbacks.
Value within Class

ES, man. ES, auto. Ralliart, man. Evolution VIII Class Average
4 5 5 4 5.8

Lancer is ordinary in ES and O-Z form, but the Ralliart models are worth a look. Still, no mainstream Lancer is a class star, and resale values are generally subpar. Evolutions are pricey, but deliver fast, rowdy fun.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
