2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Full Review
Date Published: 9/03/08
2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Review
The addition of a special-equipment trim package helps bring down the curtain on the 1998-2005 design generation of this American-built SUV. A redesigned M-Class is due for model year 2006. For '05, M-Class continues with the ML350, which has a 232-hp V6, and the ML500, which has a 288-hp V8. Both have all-wheel drive with low-range gearing. A 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate is the sole transmission. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, antiskid/traction control, and 17-inch alloy wheels are standard. So are front and rear torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags. Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system and dashboard screen for controlling audio and navigation systems are also included. A navigation system and leather upholstery are standard on the ML500, optional on the ML350. A 2-person 3rd-row seat is available for both. The new equipment option is called the Special Edition. Available on both models, it includes among its exclusive features unique wheels, a "power dome" hood, silver-painted grille, polished aluminum roof rails, darkened taillamps, sport seats, and special badging.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Volvo XC90.
News
The redesigned 2006 M-Class starts sale this spring in V6 ML350 and V8 ML500 models. Both come with Mercedes' 7-speed automatic transmission and a revised AWD system adding hill-descent and hill-ascent controls. A new version of the high-performance ML55 AMG is expected sometime later. Mercedes will also sell a diesel M-Class for the first time in the U.S. Expected by early 2006, it uses a new 3.0-liter V6 engine, but will be barred by emissions regulations from California and four Northeastern states.

The '06 models wear a more aggressive version of the familiar M-Class look on a new unibody platform, replacing body-on-frame construction. Mercedes says the redesign adds 5.9 inches to overall length and 2.8 inches to width on a 3.7-inch longer wheelbase. Height comes down a nominal 0.4-inch. Seating for five remains despite the added length, though Mercedes says leg room improves by 2 inches in front and 1.3 inches in the rear. But some cargo space has apparently been sacrificed, as Mercedes claims maximum volume of 72.4 cu ft, down from 81.2. However, extended-length models with 3-row seating for seven are expected at some point.

Options will include a power liftgate and height-adjustable air suspension. Curtain side airbags for both seating rows remain standard, but add rollover sensors that trigger the curtains if an imminent tip is detected.

Like the old M-Class, the new models are built at Mercedes' Vance, Alabama plant, which is adding the new R-Class crossover wagon and redesigned G-Class SUV that share the new M platform. We should have full details on all three very soon, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ML350 ML500 Class Average
5 7 6

ML350 has enough power for most needs, though some test drivers complain of nonlinear throttle action. Figure just under 9 sec 0-60 mph. ML500 fast by any measure, at just 6.6 sec 0-60 in our tests.
Fuel Economy

ML350 ML500 Class Average
3 3 3.3

Test ML350 averaged 14.0 mpg in a mix of city/highway driving. Test ML500s averaged 14.6-15.1 mpg. Both engines require premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

ML350 ML500 Class Average
4 4 5.3

Trucky compared to top rivals with some bounding over bumps.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ML350 ML500 Class Average
4 4 5.4

Confident for tall SUVs, with less cornering lean than some, but steering has weak self-centering. Standard antiskid/traction control offers added security under slippery conditions. Powerful brakes provide swift, sure stops.
Quietness

ML350 ML500 Class Average
5 5 6.2

Generally refined for SUVs, but wind noise rises sharply above 60 mph, and there's more tire drone and slap than in most cars. Some engines emit marked full-throttle fan roar, but are unobtrusive at moderate cruising pace.
Controls

ML350 ML500 Class Average
5 5 6.3

Some controls won't be obvious to first-time Mercedes owners. Navigation system confusing to use and complicates audio adjustments. Cabin materials and finish generally in line with prices, but leather still costs extra on ML350.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ML350 ML500 Class Average
8 8 7.6

Comfortable and spacious. Commanding driver positioning, good visibility except for headrest obstruction astern. Large doors and reasonably low SUV step-in ease entry/exit.
Room/Comfort (rear)

ML350 ML500 Class Average
7 7 6.3

Tall, supportive cushion. Leg and foot room goes from good to tight as front seats slide rearward. OK access via low sills and adequately wide doors. Available 3rd-row seat is strictly for tykes, and even they might feel squeezed getting into or out of its tight confines.
Cargo Room

ML350 ML500 Class Average
8 8 7.5

Adequate volume. Low deck is appreciated with heavy cargo.
Value within Class

ML350 ML500 Class Average
6 5 5.9

Though our Also Consider picks hold an edge in carlike driving feel, the M-Class is one of the most competent and pleasant truck-type SUVs. Prices are in line with Mercedes' lofty image, but typically high resale values compensate some.

ML500 4-door wagon $46,400 $43,152 $720
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
