2005 Mazda 6 Review
Standard ABS for all models and an available 6-speed automatic transmission are key 2005 changes for the Mazda 6. Four-door sedan, wagon, and hatchback body styles are offered in base, Sport, and Grand Touring equipment levels. The "i" designation denotes a 160-hp 4-cyl engine and is limited to sedans and hatchbacks. Uplevel "s" versions use a 220-hp V6 and come in all three body types. Both engines come with a 5-speed manual transmission. The i models are available with a 4-speed automatic. For '05, s versions exchange an available 5-speed automatic for a 6-speed, making this one of the few cars in its price range to offer that feature. Both automatics have a manual shift gate. Standard on all Mazda 6s are antilock 4-wheel disc brakes; the ABS feature had been optional on base-level versions. Traction control is also standard on all models for '05; it had been optional on i versions. Base; sedan has 16-inch wheels, all others have 17s. Front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags for both seating rows are optional on the base i sedan and standard on other 6s. All models have a tilt/telescope steering wheel and split folding rear seatbacks. Leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard on Grand Touring models, optional on Sports. A sunroof is standard on Grand Touring versions, optional on other 6s.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.

Our Best Buys include the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks include the Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Outback and Legacy.
News
A racy MazdaSpeed 6 sedan with all-wheel drive bows this summer as an early-2006 addition. As announced in late '04, it packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine with direct fuel injection and some 274 hp. A 6-speed manual transmission is mandatory. Also standard are a limited-slip differential, uprated suspension, 18-inch wheels, antilock brakes and antiskid/traction control. To match its performance persona, the MazdaSpeed gets its own front and rear fascias, plus special sport bucket seats and metal-look interior trim. Automatic climate control and 200-watt Bose CD stereo round out the package. Mazda hopes to sell 3000-5000 a year at a projected starting price of just under $30,000.

The basic Mazda 6 design is still fairly fresh, so sources expect no big near-term changes. But this versatile platform, already spawning various new models at parent Ford, will be the basis for a so-called "premium" Mazda sport wagon being rumored for 2007. Details are scant, but we hear this will be a tall-body design much larger than Mazda's Tribute SUV and powered by a new 3.5-liter Ford-sourced V6. A whispered $27,000 base price suggests Mazda is targeting sportier crossovers like the BMW X3 and Nissan Murano. No word on name yet, but don't be surprised if it's Mazda 7.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
4 5 6 6 5.3

Quite peppy with 4-cyl and manual transmission; automatic dulls acceleration. V6 models lively enough, but don't feel that much faster than the fours; they don't spring off the line, and need high rpm for maximum punch. Test manual-transmission s sedan did 7.5 sec 0-60 mph. No opportunity yet to test new 6-speed automatic.
Fuel Economy

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
6 6 5 5 5.2

With manual transmission, 4-cyl models averaged 22.3 mpg. Test manual-transmission V6s averaged 20.9 mpg in mixed city/highway use, 18.2 with gas-eating performance runs. Mazda recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines.
Ride Quality

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.1

Taut, but generally absorbent and comfortably controlled, even with 17-inch tires. Some sharp reaction to pavement seams at highway speed.
Steering/Handling/Braking

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
6 7 7 7 6.1

Suspension settings basically the same regardless of trim level, though 17-inch tires furnish more grip in fast turns than 16s. Still, all models agile and composed, even the wagon. Modest body lean in turns, responsive steering, fine straightline tracking. V6s show mild "torque steer" steering-wheel tug in fast takeoffs. Wide turning circle hurts close-quarters maneuverability. Brakes strong, progressive.
Quietness

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
6 6 6 6 6

Engines relaxed at cruise, make nice pedal-to-metal growls, but neither is super quiet. Modest rough-surface tire noise with 17-inch treads, though sedan body style slightly better at muffling road noise than hatchback, wagon. No undue wind roar.
Controls

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.6

Unobstructed gauges, but not all testers like Grand Touring versions' red illumination. Main climate controls are simple knobs, but silvery finish makes their markings tough to read by day. Same goes for audio controls, which have busy design. Climate and audio settings appear in center dashtop display, remote from controls themselves--a design not all testers like. Interior has nicely padded upper surfaces, but disappoints with hard, thin-feeling plastic panels below.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.3

Comfortable seats, though some drivers may want a longer cushion, others better lateral support in fast turns. Six-footers have ample leg room, adequate head room. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel a plus, but may not tilt high enough for tall drivers. Wagons provide easy all-around visibility. Rear spoiler hampers over-the-shoulder view on hatchbacks and Sport sedans.
Room/Comfort (rear)

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
5 5 5 5 4.7

Seat cushion slightly soft, so support nothing special. But good toe space, and leg room exceeds that of most like-sized cars, though tightens noticeably if front seats are moved well back. Adequate head room. Entry/exit easy enough, despite narrow thresholds and doors that could open wider. Center-occupant shoulder belt on wagon and hatchback is awkward to find and fasten.
Cargo Room

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
4 7 4 7 4.5

All models have roomy, nicely trimmed cargo bays with compact, noninvasive strut-type hinges on trunklid/hatch. Sedan trunk won't swallow bulky objects, but hatchback and wagon will. Convenient spring-loaded seatback releases in sedan trunk and hatchback/wagon cargo area, but seats don't quite lie flat. Decent cabin storage, plus rear under-floor storage in hatchback and wagon.
Value within Class

i Base sdn, auto. i Sport hatch, man. s Sport sdn, man. s Base wgn, man. Class Average
8 8 8 8 5.7

In terms of overall refinement and interior materials, the Mazda 6 is a shade off the pace set by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in this class. But despite tepid 4-cyl acceleration with automatic transmission, it's a match for any rival in terms of driving satisfaction. It's roomy, pricing and equipment levels are competitive, and the wagon and hatchback have little class competition. This is a solid Recommended choice.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
