2005 Lincoln Aviator Review
Lincoln's luxury version of the Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer gets standard Roll Stability Control for 2005. Aviator differs from Explorer and Mountaineer in styling, engine power, suspension tuning, and cabin decor. Aviator uses a 302-hp version of the 239-hp V8 that's optional in the Ford and Mercury. It has a 5-speed automatic transmission and offers rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Newly standard for '05, the antiskid/traction-control system includes Ford's Roll Stability Control, which is designed to detect an impending tip and activate the antiskid system to reduce chances of a rollover. A folding 3rd-row bench seat is standard, and a 3-passenger 2nd-row bench seat is available in place of buckets for up to 7-passenger capacity. Standard head-protecting curtain side airbags serve the 1st and 2nd seating rows. Power-adjustable pedals, rear obstacle detection, and dual-zone climate system with rear controls are also standard. Options include a sunroof, navigation system, and rear DVD entertainment. Note that Aviator production is scheduled to end before the 2006 model year.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.

Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Volvo XC90.
News
Lincoln confirms that Aviator is morphing into a car-type crossver SUV for 2007. Targeting the likes of Chrysler Pacifica, Infiniti FX and Lexus RX 330, the new model is based on the adaptable Mazda-developed "CD3" platform that will serve several upcoming Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and sportwagons. Front-drive and AWD models will introduce a new 3.5-liter corporate V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission jointly developed by Ford and General Motors. Word is that styling and some interior features will be taken directly from a recent concept design, so look for moderately edgy styling with a split tailgate, plus standard four-place seating with individual buckets, movable front/rear center consoles, and all the expected luxury-class options. Meantime, Ford recently announced that the current Explorer-based Aviator will end production in July 2005, which means Lincoln dealers won't have a midsize SUV to sell for a long 18 months.
