Vehicle Highlights
Additional safety equipment tops the list of 2005 changes to Infiniti's crossover SUV. FX is a 5-seat wagon derived from Infiniti's G35 sedan. Two models are offered. The FX35 has a 280-hp V6 and rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The FX45 has a 315-hp V8 and AWD. Both have a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate. FX's AWD lacks low-range gearing and is not intended for off-roading. ABS, antiskid/traction control, front torso side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and xenon headlamps are standard. For '05, the curtain side airbags are designed to deploy if the system detects an impending rollover. Newly optional for 2005 is Nissan's Lane Departure Warning system that alerts the driver to unintentional movement from a designated traffic lane; it's grouped in a package with rear DVD entertainment. FX35 comes with 18-inch wheels. A sport suspension with 20-inch wheels is standard for FX45, optional for FX35. Same goes for leather upholstery, heated front seats, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, and driver-seat memory. A tire-pressure monitor is standard for all. Optional on both models is a Technology Package with a navigation system, adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance, and rearview TV camera. The package also includes an "intelligent key" system that allows the driver to unlock the vehicle by pressing buttons on the doors and to start it without inserting the key into the ignition.
COMPETITION
Consumer GuideĀ® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize SUVs are similar in size and construction to Midsize SUVs. Most, in fact, are gilded versions of Midsize SUVs; though a few are exclusive upscale designs.
Our Best Buys include the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, and Lexus RX. Our Recommended pick is the Volvo XC90.
