Vehicle Highlights

Cadillac's 2-seat convertible is unchanged for 2005, except for paint and interior-trim colors. The XLR's chassis, structure, and composite-plastic body panels are similar to the Chevrolet Corvette's, but XLR has unique styling, a power-retractable hardtop, and different suspension tuning. Its V8, a 320-hp version of Cadillac's 4.6-liter Northstar, is also different. The sole transmission is a 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate. An antiskid/traction-control system is standard, as is GM's Magnetic Ride Control, which automatically adjusts suspension firmness based on the road surface. Tires are 18-inch run-flats; no spare is provided. XLR comes with heated/cooled leather seats, wood interior trim, and side airbags covering head and torso. A 7-inch dashboard screen displays navigation and audio functions and plays video DVDs with the transmission in Park. Also standard are adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance, and Cadillac's Keyless Access that allows starting the engine and operating the locks without removing the keyfob from pocket or purse. Satellite radio is the only option.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Offering more power and style than typical Sporty/Performance vehicles, Premium Sporty/Performance Cars usually cost much more and have more comfort and convenience equipment. Two-passenger convertibles and 4-seat coupes rule the roost in this class.

Our Best Buy is the Chevrolet Corvette. Our Recommended picks include the BMW Z4, Chrysler Crossfire, and Mercedes-Benz CLK.
