ACCELERATION
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.7 |
Strong in all models. Previous years' 300-hp test DeVilles clocked 7.0 sec 0-60 mph; loss of 10 hp may make 2005 model fractionally slower. Smooth, responsive transmission.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 4.1 |
Test models averaged 14.6-16.7 mpg on recommended 87-octane fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 8 | 8.2 |
Comfortable and absorbent, though sharp bumps sometimes come through with a snap. Overall, just shy of top luxury imports.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 7 | 6.8 |
DTS holds its own for handling against imported luxury sedans. Base, DHS are competent, but less athletic on their smaller tires. Good stopping power, but some of our testers complain of mushy brake-pedal feel.
QUIETNESS
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 8 | 8.5 |
Wind and road noise very well-suppressed. Engines smooth, refined, never annoying.
CONTROLS
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6 | 6.2 |
DHS and DTS come with analog gauges that we prefer over base model's digital displays, though all are legible. Most controls are large, clearly labeled. Navigation system fairly well-integrated, but takes time to learn; screen readability compromised by smudges and bright sunlight. Cabin materials, workmanship tops among domestic brands, though the best imports are better overall.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 9 | 9 | 8.7 |
Few sedans are more spacious or comfortable, but a middle rider will feel squeezed. DHS/DTS standard "massaging" seats don't enhance comfort much.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 8.3 |
Plenty of leg and head room. Firm, generous cushions. Wide enough for three adults. Doors open wide for easy exit.
CARGO ROOM
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5 |
Four-golf-bag trunk opens at bumper level. Good interior storage space.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | DHS | DTS w/nav. sys. | Class Average |

Affluent younger buyers still favor imports, but a range of virtues qualify the big Cadillac as an alternative Recommended pick.
