2004 Volvo XC90: Overview

Volvo's first SUV is an upscale wagon based on its S80 car platform. XC90 seats up to seven and is close in size to the Acura MDX. It comes in two models, both with a turbocharged engine, standard seating for five, and a combination rear liftgate/drop-down tailgate. The 2.5T offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and uses a 208-hp 5-cyl and a 5-speed automatic transmission. The T6 has AWD, a 268-hp 6-cyl, and a 4-speed automatic. Both transmissions have a manual shift gate. XC90's AWD lacks low-range gearing and isn't intended for severe off-road use. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and antiskid/traction control are standard. So is Volvo's Roll Stability Control, designed to detect an impending tip and activate the antiskid system to reduce chances of a rollover. Also included are front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags covering the first two seating rows. The 3rd-row seat is part of the optional Versatility Package, which includes rear load-leveling suspension and 3rd-row climate and audio controls. The 2nd-row bench splits 40/20/40 and offers an optional integrated child-booster seat for its middle section. All XC90s have wood interior trim. Leather upholstery is optional on the 2.5T, standard on T6. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard and are restyled for 2004; 18s are optional. Other options include rear-obstacle detection, navigation system, and heated front seats.
