2004 Volkswagen Touareg: Overview

Volkswagen's only SUV is a midsize 5-passenger luxury wagon named for a nomadic tribe of the Sahara. Touareg (tour-regg) is available with a 220-hp V6, 310-hp V8, or a 310-hp V10 turbodiesel. All models have an all-wheel-drive system suitable for serious off-road use. Touareg was developed in conjunction with Porsche, which offers its own version as the more-expensive Cayenne. Touareg is a 4-dr wagon with a rear liftgate. No 3rd-row seating is available. Standard equipment includes AWD with low-range gearing and a locking center differential; a locking rear differential is optional. ABS and an antiskid system are also are standard. A height-adjusting air suspension is standard on the V10, optional on others. The V6 has 17-inch wheels, the V8 and turbodiesels 18s or optional 19s. The only transmission is a 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate. Front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags for both seating rows are standard. All models come with wood and aluminum interior trim and a sunroof. Leather upholstery is standard on the V8 and turbodiesel, optional on the V6. Other available features include OnStar assistance, navigation system, obstacle-detection system, and 4-zone climate control. Towing capacity is 7716 lb on all models.
