A realistic four-passenger interior mixed with the flair of a convertible make the Solara softtop a distinctive vehicle. About the only thing around like it for the money is the Chrysler Sebring--and the Solara can be ordered with a nav system, a feature not available on the Sebring.

The Solara convertible was a pleasant companion during the five nicest months of the year that constituted the period of this long-term test. Appointments are very nice and it's fairly roomy. But it wasn't a particularly stirring companion in the performance department, and the cowl shake tends to negate Toyota's reputation for solidly built vehicles.

If you care more about comfort than sport, there isn't a better four-seat convertible on the market. Solara's body quivers and shakes over bumps and the top leak is disturbing--we'll have to keep tabs on both--but overall it is a comfortable cruiser that does everything its owners will ever ask.
Tom Appel
Copious body flex is a major disappointment in this otherwise well-built cruiser. Not even sorta sporty, Solara is best suited for sun lovers "of a certain age." The $30k sticker seems reasonable given the level of equipment and materials.
