Vehicle Highlights

A larger engine, revised styling, and available side airbags headline 2004 for Toyota's smallest SUV. RAV4 retains 4-cyl power, but swaps a 148-hp 2.0 for a 161-hp 2.4. It comes with manual transmission or extra-cost automatic and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. An antiskid/traction-control system is new for '04. It's standard, as is ABS, which had been optional. Rear disc brakes instead of drums and a tire-pressure monitor are also new standard features. Available front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are another first for RAV4. The suspension is retuned; exterior styling and interior trim are altered slightly; and power mirrors, steering-wheel audio controls, and variable-intermittent windshield wipers are now standard. Leather upholstery, alloy wheels, and sunroof remain optional.
