Vehicle Highlights
Little-changed for 2004, this crossover wagon shares its basic design and Toyota powertrain with the Pontiac Vibe, which differs in styling and features availability. Matrix has a swing-up tailgate and separate-opening window and comes in Standard, XR, and XRS trim. All use a 1.8-liter 4-cyl engine. Standard and XR have 130 hp in base front-wheel-drive form, 123 hp with all-wheel drive. The XRS has 180 hp and is front-drive only. Manual transmission is standard: a 6 speed for XRS, a 5 speed for the others. Automatic is optional for front-drive Standard and XR and included on AWD models. AWD versions have the same ride height as front-drive equivalents and are not designed for off-road use. ABS is standard for XRS and AWDs, available on other models. The XRS adds rear disc brakes, plus aero body trim. Front side airbags are optional for all models. Curtain side airbags are unavailable. Wheels are 16 inch, with 17s available for XRS and the front-drive XR. An optional navigation system is exclusive to XRS.
