2004 Toyota Camry Review
More V6 power, a new 5-speed automatic transmission, and midyear addition of a lower-price base model make 2004 news for this popular midsize sedan. Camry gets a new Standard model to join existing LE, uplevel XLE, and sporty SE models. Standards come only with a 4-cyl engine; other models offer the 4 cyl or a V6. The 3.0-liter V6 available in LE and XLE gains 18 hp this year to 210. Newly available for SE is a 3.3-liter V6 with 225 hp. Both V6s come with a new 5-speed automatic transmission. The 4-cyl comes with manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. XLEs and the V6 SE include antilock 4-wheel disc brakes; ABS is otherwise optional. Optional on all are front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags, which can be combined with an optional antiskid system on V6 models. Other options include a power-adjustable accelerator pedal for automatic-transmission models and a navigation system with dashboard touch screen. Standards and LEs come on 15-inch wheels; others have 16s. SEs include a firmer suspension and special trim. A new Limited Edition option package for 4-cyl/automatic LEs includes woodgrain interior trim, unique exterior trim, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Camry's basic design is shared by the ES 330 at Toyota's luxury Lexus division.
News
Sources have next to no information about Camry's next full redesign, but think it's on for model-year 2007 or '08. Until then, the current generation, new for '02, should continue with no basic change. However, Toyota has confirmed a hybrid-power Camry, which may arrive with the redesign. No word on what the gas engine will be, but the Hybrid Synergy Drive should be basically a larger version of that in Toyota's small Prius hatchback. Unlike other U.S.-market Camrys, most of which are built in Kentucky, the hybrid would be imported from Japan.
