2004 Toyota 4Runner Review
Toyota's truck-based midsize SUV gains an optional 3rd-row seat and available rearview camera for 2004. 4Runner comes in SR5, Sport, and Limited models. Each offers a V6 with 4-speed automatic transmission or a V8 with 5-speed automatic. The V8 has less horsepower but more torque than the V6. Both engines are available with rear-wheel drive. V6s also offer 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement, and V8s offer all-wheel drive. Both systems include low-range gearing and a hill descent control designed to maintain a slow, steady speed down steep slopes. Hill ascent control--to avoid sliding backward--is standard for all models, as are antiskid/traction control and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. Front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are available linewide. The curtain airbags are now designed to deploy when sensors detect an impending rollover. SR5s come on 16-inch wheels; others have 17s. A firmer suspension is standard on Sports, optional for Limiteds. A load-leveling rear air-spring suspension is available for V8 Limiteds. The available navigation system can be equipped with a video camera that displays a rear view on the dashboard screen when Reverse is selected. The new 2-passenger 3rd-row seat option joins an available rear-seat audio system. Rear DVD entertainment is optional. Towing capacity is 5000 lb. Toyota's Lexus luxury division sells an upscale AWD V8 4Runner with different styling as the GX 470.
News
The just-redesigned 4Runner shouldn't see any major changes in the next couple of years, but its gains in size and price leave room for a kid brother that's expected for 2006. The new body-on-frame SUV is said to be patterned on the recent FJ Cruiser concept and will probably have similar retro styling that recalls Toyota's early Land Cruisers of the '50s and '60s. We'd expect a different name to avoid running afoul of Chrysler and its PT Cruiser--something like FunRunner or TrailRunner. Whatever it's called, the new 4-dr will likely offer 4-cyl and optional V6 engines with available dual-range 4WD, plus a funky, functional interior and plenty of scope for youth-market customizing. Prices should split the difference between 4Runner and the smaller car-based RAV4.
