2004 Subaru Outback and Legacy Review
Legacy and Outback come in sedan and wagon form. Outbacks have a raised suspension and SUV-flavored styling, but all these vehicles share a basic 4-dr design with standard all-wheel drive and horizontally opposed engines. Four-cylinder models come with manual transmission or optional automatic. A 6-cyl engine powers Outback H6 and VDC sedans, and H6 35th Anniversary, L.L. Bean, and VDC wagons. They come only with automatic transmission. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard on all models. Front side airbags are exclusive to the Legacy 2.5 GT and to all Outbacks except the base and H6 35th Anniversary wagons. VDCs include antiskid/traction control. OnStar assistance is standard for H6 sedan, L.L. Bean wagon, and both VDC Outbacks. Celebrating Subaru's 1969 entry into the U.S. market, 35th Anniversary Editions of Legacy and Outback include added standard features.

Redesigned '05 Outbacks and Legacys with curtain side airbags and more power are expected to arrive in summer '04, while the similar Baja 4-door pickup carries on for '05 with few changes.
News
These Subarus are redesigned as early-2005 models arriving in spring 2004 with new styling, additional features, and more power. Legacy and the SUV-flavored Outback share the same platform, but the Outback has a slightly raised suspension. Exterior dimensions grow fractionally. All-wheel drive is again standard, as are horizontally opposed engines. Legacy and Outback 2.5i models have a 168-hp 2.5-liter 4 cyl and come with manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. Legacy 2.5 GTs and Outback 2.5 XTs have a new turbocharged version of that engine with 250 hp. They come with manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate and steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons. Topping the line are three Outback 3.0 R models: sedan, L.L. Bean Edition wagon, and VDC Limited wagon. They use a 3.0-liter 6-cyl engine with 250 hp, up from 212 last year, and come only with the 5-speed automatic. All models include ABS, front side airbags, and head-protecting curtain side airbags. The Outback 3.0 R VDC Limited wagon adds an antiskid system. Available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, woodgrain interior trim, automatic climate control, and heated windshield wipers.
