2004 Porsche Cayenne Review
Midyear addition of a lower-cost V6 version and a new off-road package highlight 2004 changes to Porsche's unibody SUV. Cayenne shares its basic design with Volkswagen's Touareg. However, Cayenne is more expensive and has its own engines and styling. The new 3.2-liter V6 version, added in January '04, joins the existing 4.5-liter V8 versions. All engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability via steering-wheel buttons or console lever. The base Cayenne's V6 has 247 hp, the S model's V8 has 340, and the Turbo model's V8 has 450. Cayenne's AWD system is designed for severe off-road use and has low-range gearing and a locking center differential. Available midyear is a new Advanced Off-Road Technology Package that includes side and floor protection along with a locking rear differential and antiroll bars that can be electronically disconnected for greater suspension articulation. ABS and antiskid/traction control are standard, as is leather upholstery. Optional on base and S and standard on the Turbo is a self-leveling air suspension with six driver-adjustable heights, including 10.7 inches of off-road clearance. Cayenne comes with 17-inch wheels, S and Turbo with 18s; 19s and 20s are optional. The liftgate has separate-opening glass. Available features include heated steering wheel and seats, steering-linked bi-xenon headlamps, navigation system, and obstacle warning. Towing capacity on all models is 7716 lb.
News
Though sources see no major near-term changes for Cayenne, there's been talk of an ultra-buff Clubsport model with a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and--no kidding--around 600 hp. Said to be due for 2005 or '06, it's one of several high-power Clubsport Porsches being planned for the next few years. Rumored price: a cool $100,000-plus.

Meantime, Porsche will likely take advantage of its SUV investment to offer a third car line, now rumored for 2006 or '07. The company is known to be working on a larger-than-911 4-passenger coupe as project E2A--and, believe it or not, a coupe-like 4-dr "sedan" as project E2B. Porsche is still evidently debating which way to go, though one source says it might do both models. Whatever the decision, E2 would reportedly use the Cayenne's V8/AWD powerteam and perhaps part of its underbody structure as an answer to the BMW 6-Series and Mercedes CL in the luxury high-speed GT market. Porsche's last such car was the controversial 928 coupe, which faded away in the early 1990s. No one knows yet what E2 might be called, but we'd bet on 989, which references an earlier, aborted V8 Porsche sedan.
