2004 Porsche Boxster Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2004 Porsche Boxster Review
Porsche's entry-level car is a 2-seat convertible that uses a midmounted, horizontally opposed 6-cyl engine. The base model comes with a 225-hp 2.7-liter and 5-speed manual transmission, the Boxster S with a 258-hp 3.2 and 6-speed manual. Both offer an optional 5-speed automatic with manual-shift steering-wheel buttons. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and side airbags are standard. Antiskid/traction control is optional. Also included is a power soft top with a heated glass rear window. A removable hardtop is optional. The base model has 16-inch wheels and is available with the S's 17s; 18s are optional for both, as is a sport exhaust system. A heavily revised 2005 Boxster is expected in the first half of calendar '05.
News
Various German reports confirm a heavily revised Boxster will be unwrapped at the January 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A first-ever Boxster coupe, rumored for some time, arrives in autumn of '05. Against the familiar "986" Boxster, the replacement "987" gets subtly revised sheetmetal imparting a more muscular look, plus oval headlamps, larger air ducts in the front bumper and rear fenders, new taillights, standard lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels, and a slightly wider rear spoiler. Dimensions and weight are little changed. So are the two engines, though each reportedly adds 10 hp and somewhat more low-rpm torque. The base Boxster apparently gets the S-model's standard 6-speed manual transmission, and the 5-speed automatic option gives way to a 6-speed unit with manual-shift steering-wheel buttons. Expected later on is a computer-controlled 6-speed manual with twin clutches, borrowed from the revised '05 911. Other reported changes include lighter suspension components, a modest increase in axle widths, a new dashboard, and upgraded cabin materials. The coupe, when it arrives, will reportedly be priced below the base roadster. Further out, there's talk of a no-frills Clubsport Boxster with more power courtesy of a larger 911 six. We hope to have more details soon, so keep checking back with us.

Acceleration

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
7 8 7.7

Porsche says 0-60-mph times are about 6.4 sec for the base version, 5.7 for the S; we got 6.0 sec on test S. Both deliver smooth, ready power in any situation. Tiptronic responsive enough, but we prefer the manuals.
Fuel Economy

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
6 5 4.7

Test manual-transmission base model averaged 23.3 mpg. Test S averaged 17.2 with more city driving. Both require premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
2 2 4

Buttoned-down sports-car suspension is quite stiff. All models made available for test so far came on optional 18-inch wheels, which trigger lots of thumpy jiggle over tar strips and patches. Expect much the same of the 17s, but the 16s should be more forgiving. Some testers feel Boxster has too much body flex on uneven surfaces; others say rigidity is fine, but noted squeaks from door and window seals in test examples.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
10 10 8.4

Entertaining and athletic, as expected of Porsches, with grippy stability, little body lean. Available antiskid/traction system enhances safety on slippery roads.
Quietness

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
2 2 4

Top-down wind rush not objectionable, and race-car-engine note delights. Cockpit noisy top up to due engine behind seats, copious tire roar, moderately insulated roof.
Controls

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
5 5 5.8

Tachometer appropriately dead-ahead, but smaller, flanking speedometer marked in broad 25-mph increments and its supplemental digital readout is illegible in sun's glare. Cabin decor sophisticated enough with solid materials, careful assembly.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
4 4 5.4

Low-slung cockpit decently roomy for 6-footers, and seats hug supportively. Entry/exit demands flexibility with top down or up. Top-up rear visibility limited by smallish rear window.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
0 0 .6

(No rear seating.)
Cargo Room

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
2 2 2.2

Front and rear compartments hold a fair bit of stuff for a 2-seater. Note that there's no topside engine access other than three service ports in the rear trunk.
Value within Class

Base w/18-inch wheels, man. S w/18-inch wheels, man. Class Average
6 6 4.6

Though more backroads-stormer than comfortable long-distance tourer, the Boxster is a highly capable yet fairly practical sports car. Even base models easily nudge $50,000 when popularly equipped, but this is still the most affordable way to live the "Porsche experience."

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Porsche Boxster 2-door convertible
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
