2004 Nissan Murano Review
Available satellite radio and a manual shift mode for the automatic transmission highlight 2004 changes to Nissan's "crossover" car-type SUV. Built on the Altima sedan platform, Murano has a liftgate without separate-opening glass. It is offered in SL and uplevel SE models. The only engine is a 3.5-liter V6 that it shares with various Nissan cars. The sole transmission is a continuously variable automatic. Like other CVTs, it provides a near-infinite range of gear ratios. For '04, SE models get a manual shift mode that allows the driver to select preset "gears." Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are offered. Leaving off-road duty to its truck-based Pathfinder SUV, Nissan does not fit Murano with low-range gearing, though a console button locks its AWD into a 50/50 power split for extra traction up to 30 mph. ABS, front torso side airbags, and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard. The SE adds a firmer suspension. Both models have 18-inch wheels. Xenon headlamps are standard on SE, optional on SL. Antiskid/traction control is optional on both. A tilt steering wheel and dual-zone climate control are standard. Options include power-adjustable pedals, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and rear DVD entertainment. No 3rd-row seating is offered.
