Vehicle Highlights
More power leads 2004 news for this compact SUV based on Mitsubishi's Lancer subcompact-car platform. Outlander returns in LS and uplevel XLS models, both with front- or all-wheel drive. AWD versions lack low-range gearing and are not intended for serious off-road use. All models seat five and have a 4-cyl engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate. For 2004, the engine gains 20 hp. Mitsubishi claims quieter running via a revised exhaust system and various noise-deadening measures. All Outlanders come with 16-inch wheels, 60/40 split folding rear seatback, air conditioning, CD audio, cruise control, and power windows/locks/mirrors. XLS upgrades include alloy wheels, roof rails, rear spoiler, fog lamps, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options exclusive to XLS models include front side airbags, ABS, sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.
