2004 Lincoln LS Review
Minor suspension revisions, available satellite radio, and the midyear addition of a sporty appearance package mark Lincoln's near-luxury sedan for 2004. LS shares a platform with the British-built S-Type from Ford subsidiary Jaguar, but differs in styling and equipment. A 232-hp Ford V6 and a 280-hp Jaguar-designed V8 are the engine choices. Both use a 5-speed automatic transmission. V6s come with 16-inch wheels, V8s with 17s and a sport suspension. Front side airbags, ABS, and traction control are standard. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are optional, as is an antiskid system. Also optional are heated rear seats, navigation system, and xenon headlights. Power-adjustable pedals are standard. Heated and cooled front seats are available on all but the base V6 model. Satellite radio is a new dealer-installed option, and Lincoln says suspension revisions reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. Added midyear was the LSE Appearance Package that includes unique front and rear styling, chrome wheels, spoiler, and interior cues.

News
A redesigned LS is on for 2006, but its makeup is unclear. Reports indicate the new model will use either a much-revamped version of the current "DEW" platform or a "premium" version of the derivative "D2C" platform developed for the '05 Ford Mustang. Either way, overall size and engineering format should be roughly the same, but the LS will move to the crisp new look of recent Lincoln concept designs.

One of those appeared at the 2004 New York Show as the Zephyr, said to be very close to the showroom model that's also slated for '06. Expected to retain the Zephyr name, this is a smaller entry-level Lincoln based on the front-drive "CD3" platform originally developed by Ford's Japanese affiliate for the Mazda 6. Ford and Mercury will sell retrimmed versions with less standard equipment and lower prices. Sources say Zephyr will bow with Ford's revised "Duratec 30" 3.0-liter V6, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. Optional all-wheel drive and possibly a 3.5-liter "Duratec 35" V6 are expected down the road. Zephyr will be about the size of a Mazda 6, but will come only as a sedan that may be stretched a bit in wheelbase and overall length. Ford Motor Company's Hermosillo, Mexico plant will build Zephyr and its corporate sisters.
