2004 Kia Sedona Review
A new grille is the only 2004 change of note for this South Korean automaker's minivan. Sedona has standard V6 power, 7-passenger seating, and comes in a single body length, which is about 2 inches longer than a regular-length Dodge Caravan. LX and uplevel EX models are offered. Both use a 3.5-liter V6 teamed with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Dual sliding rear side doors are standard, but power doors and side airbags are unavailable. ABS is optional. The LX's 2nd-row seat is a bench; the EX has buckets. Leather upholstery and a power sunroof are optional on EX. For '04, LX models get a standard center tray table that was previously standard on EX and optional on LX. Kia is owned by Hyundai and duplicates Hyundai's warranty: 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper, 10/100,000 powertrain, and 5-years/unlimited roadside assistance.
News
A redesigned Sedona is due for 2007 with a first-time choice of short- and long-body models, plus standard full-length curtain side airbags. Sources say sales begin in the spring of '06. The makeover puts Sedona on the new-generation Kia Optima/Hyundai Sonata sedan platform, and also increases exterior dimensions. Expect short models to approximate the size of regular Dodge Caravans, the long versions to be close to Grand Caravans. All should offer 3-row seating. Styling looks a blend of Caravan, Honda Odyssey and Ford Freestar, judging from prototypes snapped by "spy" photographers. The standard curtain airbags reflect Kia's aim of including more "passive safety" features to make its products more attractive to consumers. Incidentally, Hyundai will get its own version of the new Sedona, the first U.S.-market minivan for Kia's corporate parent. This is also due for '07, but might beat the Sedona to showrooms by a few weeks or months.
