A stretched-body model is a midyear addition to Jeep's tradition-bound compact SUV. The new model, called the Unlimited, rides a 10-inch-longer wheelbase than other Wranglers and is 15 inches longer overall. All Wranglers are available with a soft top and plastic side windows or with an extra-cost hardtop with glass windows. The base SE model has a 147-hp 4-cyl engine. X, Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, and Unlimited models have a 190-hp inline 6 cyl. A 4-speed automatic transmission is standard on the Unlimited and optional on other models in place of a 5-speed manual. All Wranglers have 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. ABS is optional on X, Sport, and Sahara; it's not available on the others. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard or optional on all but the SE. A 30-inch tire package is standard on Sahara and Unlimited, optional on Sport. Rubicon is intended for severe off-road use and comes with 31-inch-equivalent off-road tires, front- and rear-locking differentials, and low-ratio gearing. Also for '04, a tilt steering wheel is standard on all Wranglers, and all but SE get a standard CD player. Towing capacity is 3500 lb on the Unlimited, 2000 lb on others. Unlimited's additional length adds 2 inches of rear leg room and more cargo volume behind the rear seat. Its soft top has a fold-back forward section for a sunroof effect.
