2004 Jaguar S-Type: Overview

S-Type is the less-expensive of Jaguar's two luxury sedans. It comes as a base 3.0 model with a 235-hp V6, the 4.2 model with a 294-hp 4.2-liter V8, and the high-performance R version with a 390-hp supercharged 4.2 V8. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on all. The 3.0 offers a 5-speed manual as a no-charge option. The base model has 16-inch wheels, the 4.2 has 17s. The S-Type R has 18s and an automatically adjusting sport suspension. The sport suspension is included in a Sport Package option for 3.0 and 4.2 models. The R also has a mesh grille, exclusive seats and interior trim, and the xenon headlamps that are optional for other S-Types. Antiskid/traction control, front side airbags, and head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard, as is a power tilt/telescoping steering column. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on V8s and optional for the 3.0. Other options include a navigation system; voice activation for some audio, phone, and climate functions; and Adaptive Cruise Control, which is designed to maintain a set following distance from traffic ahead. The British-built S-Type shares its basic underskin design with the Lincoln LS from Jaguar's parent company, Ford.
