2004 Infiniti FX Review
Suspension revisions designed to provide a softer ride are among the few 2004 changes to Infiniti's crossover SUV. FX is a 5-seat wagon derived from Infiniti's G35 sedan. Two models are offered. The FX35 has a 280-hp V6 and rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The FX45 has a 315-hp V8 and AWD. Both have a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate. FX's AWD lacks low-range gearing and is not intended for off-roading. For '04, it adds a driver-controlled snow mode to adjust low-speed throttle input and maximize traction. ABS, antiskid/traction control, front torso side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and xenon headlamps are standard. FX35 comes with 18-inch wheels. A sport suspension with 20-inch wheels is standard for FX45, optional for FX35. Same goes for leather upholstery, heated front seats, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, and driver-seat memory. Rear DVD entertainment, sunroof, and roof rails are optional. So is a Technology Package with a navigation system, adaptive cruise control designed to maintain a set following distance, rearview TV camera, and tire-pressure monitor. The package also includes an "intelligent key" system that allows the driver to unlock the vehicle by pressing buttons on the doors and to start it without inserting the key into the ignition.
News
The FX scores an industry first for 2005 with an available lane-departure system. This uses a small camera and a speed sensor to determine if the vehicle is veering outside the intended lane and sounds an alert if that occurs. We suspect the LDS will be added to the FX Technology Package, which already includes "smart" cruise control, a rearview camera and other electronic driving aids. Otherwise, Infiniti's sales- and image-boosting sport wagons should see no big changes for the next couple of years. We'd look for a styling update and perhaps a modest power boost for 2006 or '07.

Meantime, a smaller car-based crossover is said to be in the works for both the Infiniti and Nissan lineups. It's likely to be based on the G35 sedan/coupe platform. Timing is unclear, but the junior FX could surface in 2005 as an early '06 entry.
