ACCELERATION
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.1 |
Slightly more engine displacement improves power across broader rpm range without sacrificing S2000's high-revving excitement. Still need to use lower gears to ensure robust around-town response, but wrist-flick-quick lever action invites frequent shifting. Should match or beat 6.7 sec 0-60 mph of 2004 test model.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.6 |
Averaged 24.6 mpg in test that included about 70 percent highway miles. Premium fuel required.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 3.6 |
Newly standard 17-inch tires don't make stiff ride any smoother than with former 16s. Nearly every small bump and tar strip registers through seats, yet S2000 never brutally harsh.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 10 | 8 |
Changes direction quickly, precisely, with terrific grip and balance, virtually no body lean. Impressive straightline tracking. Braking swift, easily modulated. Some testers say steering not as pin-sharp as in previous S2000s, but still among the sports-car best. Poor snow traction.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.1 |
Top down, noise unobjectionable. Top up, tiresome tire roar.
CONTROLS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.1 |
Small cockpit, everything nearby. Audio unit a bit low, but redundant controls for major functions flank steering wheel. Electronic bar-graph tachometer, digital speedometer not sports-car norm, but easy to read, fit S2000's high-tech image. Unlit power window controls. Solid materials. Top operates quickly, seals well.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 4.9 |
Large persons have precious little room to spare, may find seats too confining. Tall transmission tunnel adds to cozy feel. Crouch-and-crawl entry/exit. Top-up visibility not great over the shoulder, but better than in many rivals.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1.2 |
(No rear seating.)
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 2.8 |
Pack light. Trunk holds good number of plastic grocery bags or a couple's trip-to-the-beach luggage. Interior storage very modest.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 6.2 |
Invigorating for sports-car addicts; a bit stiff and noisy for others. Mazda's Miata is a little more practical and a lot less costly than this Honda, but the spicy S2000 runs thousands less than a Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4 3.0i. The comparably priced Nissan 350Z convertible beats the S2000 for power, but not for precision.
