ACCELERATION
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 4.6 |
The 4.6 V8 has modest acceleration, but works well enough for light-duty hauling and commuting. Stronger 5.4 well-suited to heavy work, but trails Dodge Hemi V8 for overall power, GM 5.3 V8 for refinement. With 4.6, automatic transmission tends to rush upshifts, delay downshifts, frustrating passing response and hilly terrain driving.
FUEL ECONOMY
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2.3 |
Test 2WD 5.4 Lariat SuperCab averaged 13.2 mpg in mostly highway driving. Extended-use-test 4WD 5.4 Lariat SuperCrew averaged 13.2 mpg in city/highway mix over 7435 mi. No opportunity to measure with other models. Both engines use regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 3.9 |
Firm always, but reasonably comfortable and composed over big dips and swells. Still, chassis jiggles, quivers on even mildly rippled surfaces, though minimally so in SuperCrews. With empty bed, F-150's tail bounces over potholes, typical of any pickup.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3.4 |
Firm, responsive steering highlights capable handling, though F-150 as ponderous as any other big pickup in tight maneuvers. And like all pickups, rear end hops in bumpy corners. Powerful brakes, good pedal modulation. Electronic throttle control automatically adjusts to take jerkiness out of low-range 4WD driving.
QUIETNESS
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 4.5 |
No quarrel with Ford's claim that F-150 is quietest in class. Engines subdued while cruising; road and wind noise low at highway speeds.
CONTROLS
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 6.6 |
Pleasantly contemporary interiors range from spartan on XL models to upscale on leather-trimmed Lariats, though none have enough soft-touch panels to qualify as luxurious. Handsome, well-arranged gauges, but some testers find them a bit small for easy viewing. Controls for audio, automatic climate systems slightly undersized compared to those in other full-size pickups. Turn-signal/windshield-wiper stalk too short for easiest use. And available steering-wheel toggles for some audio, climate, and cruise functions not distinct enough in placement, size, or identification. Console-mounted transmission shift lever is hollow-feeling plastic.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 8.3 |
Seats firm, flat, but comfortable. Ample head and leg room. Seats in regular and extended cabs get integrated seatbelts; crew cabs use traditional pillar-mounted belts. Tall step-in, but big doors allow easy entry/exit. Outward visibility unobstructed.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 5 | 5 | 8 | 4.5 |
Extended-cab seats spacious enough for occasional use, though all but kids will likely long for crew cab's additional leg room. Seats in both are nicely padded, and angled backrests add to comfort. Rear access doors don't open independently of front doors, but rear-seaters do get accessible handles to let themselves out. Still, a confining space is formed when half-doors are opened in tandem with front doors in tight quarters; Nissan Titan only extended cab with rear doors that open wide enough to avoid this. F-150's newly optional power sliding rear window is a welcome convenience.
CARGO ROOM
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 6 | 6 | 7 | 4.7 |
Cargo-bed walls two inches higher than previous F-150's. Adds volume for hauling loose items, but makes loading and unloading from side more difficult. Tailgate-assist a convenience, but complicates tailgate removal. F-150 the only regular cab with rear doors, small panels that ease access to behind-seat storage space. SuperCab's rear-seat bottoms fold up to increase storage, but seat-frame corners jut into cargo floor. With any cab, generously sized map pockets in all doors highlight interior storage. Center-console bin not as large or accessible as in Ram. Innovative sliding-roof storage system allows for easy aftermarket add-ons.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| 2WD XLT reg. cab, 4.6 V8 | 4WD XLT ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 2WD Lariat ext. cab, 5.4 V8 | 4WD XLT crew cab, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 7.1 |
Various rivals top Ford by offering such laudable features as head-protecting side curtain airbags, 4-wheel steering, and 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement. But the redesigned F-150 brings its share of innovation to the class. And in passenger room, refinement, and on-road composure, it's more than competitive with any full-size pickup.
