2004 Dodge Durango: Overview

Dodge redesigns its midsize SUV for 2004, giving it larger dimensions and more available power. The new Durango is 3 inches longer in wheelbase, 7 inches longer overall, close to 5 inches wider, and almost 400 lb heavier than its predecessor. Durango is offered with rear-wheel drive and two all-wheel-drive systems, one with low-range gearing. Three engines are available: a new 3.7-liter V6, a 4.7-liter V8, and a newly optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 85 more horsepower than the largest previous engine. V6 models come with a 4-speed automatic transmission; V8s have a 5-speed automatic with tow/haul mode. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Traction control is optional, but no antiskid system is offered. Newly optional are head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows. Torso side airbags are unavailable. Durango comes in ST, SLT, and Limited trim. The liftgate does not have separate-opening glass and is unavailable with power assist. ST models have two rows of seats for 5-passenger capacity. SLT and Limited have a 3rd row to seat up to seven. The 3rd row drops flat to the floor and is available in a 60/40 split folding design. Leather upholstery is standard on Limited, optional on SLT. Other available features include adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, rear DVD entertainment, satellite radio, and Chrysler's UConnect, which uses the audio system as a hands-free, wireless link to cell phones. A sunroof is available for the first time. Maximum towing capacity is 8950 lb.
