2004 Chevrolet Venture Review
Satellite radio is newly available for Chevrolet's version of GM's mainstream minivans. Venture's basic design is shared with the Oldsmobile Silhouette and Pontiac Montana. The regular-length Venture comes only in a Plus model for '04. Extended-length versions have an 8-inch-longer wheelbase and come in Plus, LS, and LT models. All Ventures have a V6 and automatic transmission. Traction control is optional on LS, standard on LT. LT also offers GM's Versatrak all-wheel drive; it includes independent rear suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. A power right-side door is available for LS models. Dual power doors are available for LT models. Seven-passenger seating is standard, 8-passenger seating optional on LS and LT. The standard 2nd-row bench has an integrated child-safety seat. Standard on LT and optional on LS are 2nd-row buckets without an integrated child-safety seat. Front side airbags and ABS are standard on all but Plus models, where they're optional. Other options include rear-obstacle warning, load-leveling rear suspension, and a stowable 3rd-row seat. Exclusive to LT is standard rear DVD entertainment. For '04, satellite radio is optional for LS and LT, and the uplevel CD player also plays MP3-encoded CDs.

News
Like other GM minivans, Venture becomes a "crossover sport van" for 2005, which basically means a modest restyling with a sort of SUV flavor. The Chevy changes name to Uplander. A 200-hp 3.5-liter V6, borrowed from the Malibu car line, replaces Venture's 185-hp 3.4. Four-speed automatic remains the sole transmission. GM Versatrak all-wheel drive is available in lieu of front drive, which can be optionally augmented with GM's Stabilitrak antiskid/traction control. AWDs include 4-wheel ABS and independent rear suspension. All models come with removable, fold-flat 2nd- and 3rd-row seats that are split for versatility, but hideaway seats and curtain side airbags won't be available at any price.

Reports say this freshening will carry GM's aging minivans to 2008 or '09, when redesigned replacements come in on the company's new Lambda platform. Lambda will also serve new sporty crossover wagons at Buick, Pontiac and Saturn, but Chevy won't get one of those unless plans change along the way--as they very well could.
