2004 Chevrolet Tracker Full Review

2004 Chevrolet Tracker Review
Tracker 2-dr convertibles are dropped for 2004, leaving only 4-dr wagon models. Chevrolet's smallest SUV is a body-on-frame design by Suzuki, which sells similar Vitara V6/Grand Vitara models. Trackers are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. A V6 with automatic transmission is standard. All Trackers come with a CD player and alloy wheels. ZR2 and LT wagons offer optional leather upholstery. Side airbags aren't available, but antilock brakes are optional.
News
Tracker is a goner after 2004, replaced by the more car-like Equinox. Suzuki, the GM affiliate that originated the basic design, will no longer share a small truck-type SUV with Chevrolet, though we hear Suzuki might be selling a retrimmed Equinox in a year or two.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LT 4WD Class Average
3 4.2

V6 is no ball of fire, but automatic transmission is well-behaved.
Fuel Economy

LT 4WD Class Average
4 4.7

Not great for small SUVs. Test V6 4WD wagon averaged 17.9 mpg.
Ride Quality

LT 4WD Class Average
2 4.1

Uncomfortably choppy on all but smooth surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LT 4WD Class Average
2 4.3

Imprecise steering, copious body lean, modest cornering grip. Mediocre braking performance even with ABS. Overall driving feel less composed than most rivals, though most competitors don't have low-range 4WD for severe off-road work.
Quietness

LT 4WD Class Average
2 3.8

Wind, road noise constant intrusions. Engine gruff, loud in full-throttle acceleration.
Controls

LT 4WD Class Average
3 5.3

Adjusting low-set radio, climate controls means a long look from the road, and radio has annoyingly tiny buttons. Cabin a study in thin plastics; even leather-upholstered models have low-budget feel.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LT 4WD Class Average
3 5.5

Plenty of head room, adequate leg room. But little hip or shoulder width. Reasonable step-in height for the class. Poor rear visibility.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LT 4WD Class Average
3 4.3

Short on leg room unless front seats are well forward. Entry/exit hampered by narrow rear doors.
Cargo Room

LT 4WD Class Average
6 6.8

Scant behind rear seat, but standard split folding seatback increases space, versatility. Tailgate opens to right, hampers curbside loading.
Value within Class

LT 4WD Class Average
2 5.6

The 4WD versions have some useful off-road ability, but Tracker and Vitara are distant also-rans among compact SUVs for the kind of driving most people do. Most every class rival is more pleasant, roomier, and commands higher resale value.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
