Vehicle Highlights
Chevrolet calls SSR the "world's first convertible sport pickup truck." Based on the chassis of the TrailBlazer SUV, this limited-edition 2-seater is essentially a rear-wheel-drive regular-cab compact pickup with a metal top that powers into a well behind the seats. A 300-hp V8 and 4-speed automatic transmission is the sole powertrain. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction control are standard. Wheels are 19-inch diameter in front, 20 in back. The retro styling of the body-on-frame SSR is patterned after Chevy's 1947-53 pickup trucks. A rigid, front-hinged tonneau covers a cargo bed of approximately 5x3 ft. Trailer-towing capacity is 2500 lb.
COMPETITION
Dodge Dakota and Ford Ranger (and clone Mazda Truck) are our Best Buys. Dakota is the only one to offer a V8 engine, full-time 4WD, and near-full-size cargo and towing capacity. Ranger is the most refined and probably the best daily use vehicle.
Toyota Tacoma is our Recommended choice. It's every bit as good as the Ranger in daily use, just a tad more expensive.
