2004 Chevrolet Corvette Review
Trim packages commemorating racing Corvettes are the main 2004 additions to Chevrolet's sports car. Corvette comes in three configurations: a hatchback with a removable roof panel, a convertible with manual fabric top and heated glass rear window, and as the fixed-roof Z06 coupe. All use a 5.7-liter V8. Convertibles and hatchbacks have 350 hp and a 4-speed automatic transmission or optional 6-speed manual. The Z06 has 405 hp and comes only with the manual. ABS and antiskid/traction control are standard. Available for the convertible and hatchback is Magnetic Selective Ride Control. Set by a console switch to "Touring" or "Sport" modes, it's designed to automatically adjust shock-absorber firmness based on road conditions and driving style. The Commemorative Edition coupe and convertible feature special badges, LeMans-blue paint, and polished wheels. The commemorative Z06 adds race-inspired body stripes and a carbon-fiber hood.

News
At this year's Detroit Auto Show General Motor's bow-tie division took the wraps off an all-new Corvette for only the sixth time in the car's 50-year history. Designated C6, the 2005 'Vette delivers more power and more passionate styling. The current model's 5.7-liter V8 has been enlarged to 6.0-liters and now makes 400 horsepower and 400 pounds-feet of torque. Four-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions have been revised to handle the extra power. Front styling is highlighted by exposed headlight covers--not seen since 1962--that house high-intensity discharge headlamps. A longer wheelbase and shorter front and rear overhangs give the car a lower and more menacing look. Aerodynamics also played a big part in the 'Vettes's profile. The C6 is the slipperiest Corvette yet with a drag coefficient of 0.28. First-time features include satellite radio, an in-dash navigation system, and the On-Star communications system. Even the head-up display has been improved to show lateral acceleration in hard cornering. Prices were not announced, but production is scheduled to begin in August with an on-sale date in late September or early October. The high-performance Z06 takes the year off, but Chevy officials insist that model will be back in the near future.
