2004 Acura RL Review
Minor equipment revisions keynote Acura's 2004 RL. Honda's luxury-brand flagship sedan has unaltered styling and retains its V6 engine, 4-speed automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and antiskid/traction-control system. Front side airbags are standard; rear or curtain side airbags are unavailable. Standard navigation system accepts voice commands, and satellite radio joins the list of standard equipment. Interior-trim revisions complete the updates.

News
A clean-sheet 2005 RL is due this fall. Several Acura dealers have reportedly been told to expect standard all-wheel drive and 300 hp. The engine remains a V6, though maybe upsized to 3.8 liters, and today's 4-speed automatic transmission should give way to a 5-speed. Parent Honda, which likes to buck industry trends, believes Acura's flagship sedan doesn't need a V8 and rear-wheel drive, but the RL may score a luxury-class first by offering a hybrid powertrain. This is said to use comprise a 300-hp V6 turning the front wheels, a 100-hp electric motor driving the rear wheels, and a continuously variable automatic transmission. The gas V6 will feature Honda's new "variable cylinder management" system that shuts down three cylinders to maximize fuel economy at light throttle loads. VCM will premiere with a first-ever hybrid version of the popular V6 Honda Accord, also due this fall. No word on timing for the gas-electric RL, but Honda has been working on "big hybrids" for some time, so it might be available as early as 2006.

Hybrid or conventional, the clean-sheet RL should be somewhat larger than today's aging model and more visually interesting, perhaps with a more conservative take on the general look of the just-redesigned midsize TL. Correcting a current competitive deficit, Acura will add torso side airbags and curtain side airbags as standard. The '05 RL will also get a new Honda-designed frontal structure that's said to improve occupant protection by dispersing impact energy over a wider area.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base Class Average
5 6.4

Barely class-competitive power, and lacks V8-style midrange punch. Test car did 8.1 sec 0-60 mph.
Fuel Economy

Base Class Average
4 4.6

Test RL averaged 17.6 mpg in mostly highway driving. Acura recommends premium fuel.
Ride Quality

Base Class Average
8 7

Smooth and solid on unblemished pavement, but irregular surfaces and sharp ridges can trigger unexpected impact harshness.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base Class Average
7 6.8

Agile for a luxury sedan, but a step behind most rear-drive rivals. No undue body lean in turns. Steering responsive, though overassisted.
Quietness

Base Class Average
8 6.7

Road noise, tire slap, detract from luxury-level ambience.
Controls

Base Class Average
7 6.7

Handsome, intelligent dashboard design puts most controls within easy reach. Navigation system independent of climate and audio functions, but screen placement forces some of their controls to inconvenient locations. System among easier ones to use, but still demands a learning process.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base Class Average
8 7.2

Roomy, comfortable seating easy to tailor to individual tastes. Visibility good all around.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base Class Average
7 5.6

With front seats pushed fully back, leg and knee room only adequate. Head clearance tight for 6-footers.
Cargo Room

Base Class Average
4 4

Trunk usefully shaped, easy to load. Good cabin storage space.
Value within Class

Base Class Average
6 5.8

The RL is among the oldest luxury-car designs, and shows its age. Most rivals have more power, a more isolated ride, and the improved response of a 5-speed automatic transmission. Absence of curtain airbags is another significant shortfall in this class.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
