Vehicle Highlights
More power for all-wheel-drive versions and the midyear introduction of a high-performance edition make news for Volvo's near-luxury station wagons. All V70 and XC70 models come with an inline 5-cyl engine. The V70 2.4 has 168 hp, the turbocharged 2.4T has 197. For 2003, the V70 2.5T AWD and XC70 have 208 hp, up from 197. The sporty turbo T5 has 247. Added as an early 2004 model is the 300-hp V70 R. The 2.4, 2.4T, and T5 have front-wheel drive. The 2.5T AWD, XC70, and V70 R have all-wheel drive. The 2.4 and T5 come with a 5-speed manual transmission, the R with a 6-speed manual. A 5-speed automatic is optional on those models and standard elsewhere. The XC70 is distinguished by its raised suspension and SUV-flavored trim. The 2.4 has 15-inch wheels and offers optional 16s. The 2.4T, 2.5T AWD, XC70, and T5 have 16s and all but the XC70 offer 17s. The R has 17s and suspension driver-adjustable for ride and handling. Traction control and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard on all models. An antiskid system is standard on the T5 and R, optional on the others. All models come with front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags. Dual integrated rear child seats, a rear-facing 3rd-row seat, navigation system, and Volvo's On-Call Plus assistance system are also optional.
COMPETITION
This hotly contested segment has its benchmark in the Lexus ES 300. It blends comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 manages to offer a little more luxury than others in the class.
We Recommend the Acura TL, Audi A4, and new Infiniti G35. All offer comfort, speed, and nimble handling at attractive prices. The sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series is Recommended as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
