Vehicle Highlights

Toyota's sporty 4-cyl hatchback coupes get a cosmetic freshening and other minor changes for 2003. Celica offers a 140-hp GT model with standard 5-speed manual transmission and 180-hp GT-S with 6-speed manual. Automatic transmission is available for both and provides the GT-S with steering-wheel buttons for manual shifting. Other options include ABS, front side airbags, sunroof, and rear spoiler, plus an Action Package with adjustable rear spoiler and unique lower-body addenda. High-intensity headlamps join the options list for '03, and remote keyless entry is now available separately as well as in a Security option with theft-deterrent system. GT-S options include leather upholstery and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. All Celicas get revised front- and rear-end appearance, new-look gauges, and altered hues for dashboard, seat fabrics, and headliner. Also, Celica's premium audio is a new JBL system; it's standard for GT-S and optional for GT and includes a power antenna to replace a fixed-mast type.

COMPETITION

Our only Best Buy in this class is the fun-to-drive Acura RSX. It offers plenty of thrills for the money with impressive acceleration and great handling.

Formerly a Best Buy, Volkswagen New Beetle still features interesting blend of styling, comfort, performance, and economy. If raw performance is what you are after, we Recommend Toyota Celica. This car offers a lot of bang for your buck, but, like all sporty coupes, may not be the greatest daily driver. New to the class is the Mini Cooper, a well-mannered small car, with sophisticated driving dynamics spoiled only by a ride that too easily becomes harsh on imperfect pavement. Because it is new and available in limited numbers, dealers are not discounting.
