2003 Saab 9-3 Review
Saab redesigns its best-selling car for 2003. The traditional hatchback body is gone, but front-wheel drive and turbocharged 4-cyl engines remain. The new 9-3 is the same length overall as the version it replaces, but has new styling, is wider, and rides a 2.8-inch-longer wheelbase. A 4-dr sedan replaces 2- and 4-dr hatchbacks. The previous-generation 2-dr convertible continues pending a 2004 redesign. General Motors owns this Swedish automaker, and the '03 9-3 introduces GM's Epsilon platform that will also host the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac Grand Am and the '05 Saturn L-Series. The 9-3 sedan comes in three versions: Linear, luxury-oriented Arc, and sporty Vector. All have a turbo 2.0 liter. The 175-hp Linear offers a 5-speed manual transmission or a new 5-speed automatic. The 210-hp Arc and Vector offer the automatic or a new 6-speed manual. The automatic has a separate gate for manual shifting; on the Vector, it includes steering-wheel-mounted manual-shift paddles. Standard are antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, front side airbags, and Saab's first curtain side airbags. Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on Arc and optional on Linear in place of 15s. Vector comes with 17s. All 9-3s have leather upholstery (leather/cloth on Linear), and a 60/40 split folding rear seatback. Arc adds wood interior trim.

The carryover convertible has 205 hp and a power top with heated glass rear window. A new option package mimics the appearance of last year's high-performance Viggen version. GM's OnStar assistance system is standard on all 9-3s.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has its benchmark in the Lexus ES 300. It blends comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. ES 300 manages to offer a little more luxury than others in the class.

We Recommend the Acura TL, Audi A4, and new Infiniti G35. All offer comfort, speed, and nimble handling at attractive prices. The sporty and Euro-flavored BMW 3-Series is Recommended as a rear-drive alternative. The "3" has enough bodystyles and engine choices to suit anyone. At the other end of the near-luxury spectrum is the posh and comfortable Buick Park Avenue--an old-school luxo-cruiser from Detroit.
News
The new 9-3 has been handily outselling the old one in Europe, and could do the same in the U.S. Being less Saab-quirky may help, but it's too early to tell. Interestingly, sales of the old 9-3 jumped 17.2 percent in the first nine months of 2002 following a 5.4 percent year-to-year loss in calendar '01. Strong overseas demand is one reason why the Arc and Vector versions won't be available until next March or so, though dealers are taking orders now. Meantime, there's talk of a high-performance Aero sedan to take over from the departed Viggen hatchback. New-design convertible models, possibly including an Aero, are definitely on for 2004.

Saab is also eyeing a first-ever 9-3 wagon for '04, including a high-riding quasi-SUV with more rugged looks and standard all-wheel drive. The latter would reply to the Volvo V70 Cross Country and other upscale car-based crossovers. However, GM recently canceled plans for a true Saab SUV to go against Volvo's new X90 and similar rigs. Corporate brass apparently deemed it out of step with Saab's mission and image.

But GM is said to be thinking hard about a small 2-seat Saab sports car, now rumored for late 2004 or early '05. The recent 9X and 9-3X concepts hint at the probable wagon-like 2-dr styling, but final approval depends on whether GM also okays a related Pontiac patterned on the recent Solstice concept. That's because neither model would likely generate enough sales to earn money, but the two of them might, thus justifying the expense of a new purpose-designed platform. One possible sticking point is powertrain layout. The Solstice assumes rear-wheel drive, but Saabs are known for front-wheel drive. The answer may be for the Saab to borrow the AWD of that upcoming crossover wagon. One thing sure: GM's Swedish branch is branching out like never before.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
6 7 7 6 6.1

Linear model slightly slow away from a stop, but picks up speed quickly to do 8 sec 0-60 mph in our test. Arc and Vector notably livelier, with plenty of passing power. Slight turbo lag and automatic transmission's slow downshifts produce a pause before power delivery. Manual transmissions' long throws, numb feel diminish sportiness.
Fuel Economy

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.1

Test automatic-transmission Linears averaged 21.8-23.5 mpg. No opportunity to measure with other 2003 sedans. Test 2002 SE convertible averaged 19.4 mpg. Saab recommends premium fuel for all.
Ride Quality

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
8 6 6 6 6.4

Firm and poised. Linear's 15-inch tires the most forgiving. Optional 16s and especially Vector's 17s, are stiff, high-performance tires that generate thump and jiggle on bumps. Convertible flexes noticeably except on smooth roads, and test example's top creaked.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
6 7 8 5 7

Where the 9-3 really shines, especially Vector with its sport suspension and 17-inch tires. Stable through turns. Steering predictable, but slightly heavier feel would help, especially at high speed. Brake-pedal feel is overly sensitive, but stops are short.
Quietness

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
7 7 7 5 6.1

Tire noise slightly more evident than it should be over some coarse surfaces, but engines muted and turbo emits only a slight hiss. Wind rush apparent at highway speed, but doesn't disturb conversation.
Controls

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.4

Main gauges easy to read. Main switchgear in center dashboard pod angled toward driver. Climate and audio readouts in dashtop screen, remote from actual controls. Audio-system adjustments not self-explanatory. Ignition switch between front seats is a Saab tradition we find unobjectionable. Fine fit and finish in contemporary-design interior, but not all cabin plastics up to near-luxury benchmarks. Turn-signal and windshield-wiper stalks suffer brittle movement.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
7 7 7 6 6.1

Notably comfortable seats with good lateral support. Standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel helps tailor position, though tallest drivers might wish for more rearward seat travel. Some testers find sedan's rear roof pillars and high headrest obscure aft visibility. Rear visibility awful in convertible with top raised.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 3 3.8

Good head clearance. Knee room disappointingly tight if front seats more than halfway back; same for toe space if driver's seat isn't elevated. Convertibles hold just two on small, narrow seat.
Cargo Room

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 2 4.1

Sedan's rear seatbacks fold to expand tall trunk's considerable volume. Plenty of interior storage space. Glovebox door stylishly integrated into dashboard and opens to reveal large, deep--and refrigerated--compartment.
Value within Class

Linear, auto. Arc, auto. Vector, man. SE conv, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 2 4.8

Its front-wheel-drive layout prevents the 9-3 from competing with the best in the class for ultimate handling prowess. And key rivals offer all-wheel drive for better all-weather security. Still, this is a dynamically capable, fun-to-drive car. Less quirky than 9-3s of old, it remains a nonconformist alternative to BMW, Audi, Lexus, and Acura, even if it's no match for overall value.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
