Vehicle Highlights
Pontiac's new crossover wagon shares a basic design with Toyota's Matrix. Vibe is built in California, Matrix in Canada, and they differ in styling and features. But they use the same Toyota-sourced platform and 1.8-liter 4-cyl engines. The base-model Vibe comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. With front-drive, it has 130 hp and a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. With AWD, it has 123 hp and automatic transmission only. The sportier Vibe GT has 180 hp and comes only with front-drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. AWD Vibes are not intended for off-roading and have the same ride height as 2WD versions. ABS is optional on the base 2WD model and standard on other Vibes. GTs include rear disc brakes instead of drums. Front side airbags are optional; curtain side airbags aren't offered. Vibes have a swing-up tailgate with separate-opening window. Standard features include a tilt steering wheel, CD player, air conditioning, and a household-type power outlet in the dashboard. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard, 17s are optional on 2WD Vibes. A power window/mirror/lock package with keyless entry is also optional, as are sunroof and in-dash CD changer. Added midyear were Spoiler and Sport option packages.
COMPETITION
Playing the roll of crossover utility vehicle in a segment of sedans and wagons gives Chrysler PT Cruiser a leg up on the competition. It offers versatility and eye-catching styling not found among compact cars and this year adds more power with the Turbo model.
Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are new this year and are worth considering as Recommended SUV-like alternatives. Hyundai's Sonata earns recognition for offering impressive comfort, equipment, and warranty coverage at a reasonable price. The all-wheel drive Subaru Outback/Legacy is another Recommended selection, thanks to a superb AWD system and roomy cargo holds.
