Vehicle Highlights
Sunfire drops its sedan for 2003, but the surviving coupes get first-time availability of front side airbags. The GT trim level is dropped, so the line is now based on an SE model that inherits the GT's 140-hp 4 cyl as its only engine. This replaces a 115-hp 4 cyl. A restyled nose, revised rear-end appearance, and retooled dashboard are among other '03 changes. Pontiac labels Sunfire's standard level of equipment as the 1SA Option Group. Option groups labeled 1SB and 1SC follow in ascending order of price and equipment. Automatic transmission is included only with the 1SB and 1SC groups. All Sunfires previously had standard ABS and included traction control with the automatic transmission. For 2003, ABS and traction control are part of the 1SC package and are a separate option on 1SB cars. The new front side airbags are included in a Protection Package available on 1SC and 1SB models. The package includes GM's OnStar assistance service. The 1SC group includes a sport suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels; other models have 15-inch wheels. A CD player is standard except on 1SA. XM satellite radio with 100-channel receiver is a new option; a service fee is required. Other changes include new interior trim and a rear center shoulder belt. Sunfire uses the same basic design as Chevrolet's Cavalier, which offers coupes and sedans. Performance and accommodations mirror those of comparably equipped Cavaliers.
COMPETITION
Honda Civic continues to be the car to beat with a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and a high degree of civility. Also a Best Buy, Ford Focus doesn't offer the refinement of the Civic, but doesn't cost as much either.
Topping the crowded Recommended list are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys. However, they are among the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the redesigned but still reliable Toyota Corolla, the sporty Nissan Sentra, and the roomy Mazda Protege. Each of these is a valid alternative to a Best Buy if price is your major concern.
